A new study confirms what many of already know: Regular exercise is one of the best ways to combat daily stress.

Researchers at the University of Texas, Houston, asked 135 college students to fill out questionnaires to assess their daily stress loads as well as their moods, physical activity patterns and overall health.

Those who reported exercising less often experienced 37 percent more physical symptoms and 21 percent more anxiety during periods of high stress than those who exercised more frequently.

Exercise, it seems, offered students a temporary respite from their problems, a period of rejuvenation before returning to the pressure of daily stress.

According to lead researcher Dr. Cindy L. Carmack, ''Minor, everyday stress contributes to the development and exacerbation of physical and mental health problems. However, people experiencing minor stress develop different degrees of symptoms, depending on their level of physical activity.''

Exercise is Good for Men


Men who exercise have a reduced risk of dying from both cardiovascular disease and cancer.

And, according to a new report from researchers in Finland, being out of shape increases the risk of premature death as much as commonly known risk factors such as diabetes, high blood pressure, obesity and smoking.

These findings, published in the Archives of Internal Medicine, are based on a 10-year study of nearly 1,300 men.

At the start of the study, none of the participants, whose average age was 52, had cardiovascular disease, lung disease or cancer.

Researchers found that those who performed well on a maximum oxygen uptake test and could exercise longer were more likely to be alive at the end of the study.

Conversely, men who performed poorly were three times more likely to die from any cause.

It was a big hit at the recent World Gaming Congress and Exposition in Las Vegas, proving that exercise can be done anytime, anywhere.

Time to Heal

Popping a few painkillers after a strenuous workout may seem like a good idea, but a new study suggests these pills do little to relieve post-exercise soreness.

Researchers at Coventry University in the United Kingdom examined the responses of 60 healthy adults to treatment with aspirin, codeine, acetaminophen (e.g., Tylenol) and a placebo after exercising the biceps to exhaustion using free weights.

Subjects received treatment for eleven days, but none of the three drugs relieved the subject’s pain.

A normal adaptation to exercise, muscle soreness (as opposed to muscle pain, which may signal an injury) may be a good indicator that you've overextended yourself and that you should ease up a bit on your next workout.

Injury May Increase Risk of Osteoarthritis

Are you really more prone to arthritis if you've been injured?

Several studies have suggested yes, you are, but these studies relied on subjects' memories, which may be unreliable. Now a new, more reliable study confirms their conclusions.

This long-term study, conducted by the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, in Baltimore, Md., noted injuries close to when they occurred by following 1,321 medical school graduates, mostly young white men, from 1948 until 1995, when most had reached their early 60s.

Those who injured a knee in adolescence or young adulthood had a three times greater risk of later developing osteoarthritis in that knee than other subjects did. Those who suffered a knee injury as an adult were five times more likely to subsequently develop knee osteoarthritis than those who were never injured.

''This suggests that we should probably intervene before people develop arthritis,'' says lead author Dr. Allan C. Gelber. ''Because many of the injuries were sports-related, perhaps we could make sports safer, with safer equipment or on safer surfaces.''

He also suggests that minimizing further damage to injured joints - for example, with joint-stabilizing braces or by modifying high-impact movements - may reduce the risk of developing osteoarthritis later in life.

Rise and Work Out!

Individuals with exercise-induced asthma may be less likely to experience an attack in the morning than in the evening, according to the results of a new study.


Researchers conducted exercise tests with 22 people with asthma and 12 healthy patients at 7 a.m. and 6 p.m. and measured the resulting lung spasms.

For individuals with asthma, lung spasm scores were 30 percent higher in the evening as compared to the morning.

While factors such as exercise type, environmental conditions and asthma severity can all affect the occurrence of exercise-induced asthma, researchers believe the time of day may also be an important factor to consider when trying to reduce the likelihood of an attack.

Jog Your Bones Stronger

Joggers have it made. Not only do they tend to weigh less, be nonsmokers, have fewer chronic health problems and enjoy better overall health than their non-jogging peers, they have stronger bones as well.

These are the findings of a recent study of 4,254 black, Mexican-American and white males that took part in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey.

Those who reported jogging at least once per month (about 900 men) had higher bone density than their sedentary counterparts. And those who jogged nine or more times per month had the greatest bone density.

In this case, more may not necessarily be better, as those who reported jogging 20 or more times per month had about the same bone density as less frequent joggers.

Be a Tortoise, Not a Hare

You've heard the old saying: Slow and steady wins the race. Well, it may also burn more calories, at least in the long run.

Researchers at Maastricht University in the Netherlands concluded that people who engage in moderate physical activity, such as walking and biking, had the highest overall physical activity levels.

Their study of 30 men and women over a two-week period also revealed that those who exercised vigorously for short periods of time compensated for that activity by spending a greater part of their day being sedentary.

Sure, vigorous exercise burns more calories, but the moderate exercisers tended to be more active overall.
